The Luxury Design & Craftsmanship Summit was the first of its kind in Portugal, an event created to have the makers and the thinkers together to elevate design ad craftsmanship and give the artisans the value they deserve. Its main goal was to promote the ancient traditions of the artisans and how craftsmanship must be the biggest ally to design. Boca do Lobo is one of the brands created by this summit’s host, Amândio Pereira. Its CEO, Marco Costa, was one of the speakers on this event and made us realize how important craftsmanship is for Boca do Lobo as it is present on all of their products. Beautiful techniques are part of the brand’s history and were shown at this event such as the art of creating pieces with filigree, hand painting tiles, wood carving techniques, etc. A partnership between Boca do Lobo and the luxury brand Vista Alegre was presented on this event, showing how the diversity of styles and brands can get together and create something beautiful by exchanging ideas and techniques.
The Storytailors are a portuguese duo capable of marvellous things in the fashion and design field. Their names are João Branco and Luis Sanchez and they created this incredible business in 2001. They focused their business on unique clothing, different materials and brilliant mastery when it comes to their artisans.
Exclusive brand Vista Alegre is a pioneer when it comes to give the value the artisans deserve. This portuguese brand holds an history of 194 years and has developed a brilliant design mixing the old and the new, with a classical approach on a modern design. It works mainly on porcelain and crystal and presented some of their products and techniques on this design event.
Toni Grilo was also one of the speakers on this event and gave a moving speech about how one may come from nothing, try and fail, and try again and succeed if you are not afraid to make mistakes and take risks. He presented one of the brands with whom he works, Topazio, and specified the metal work techniques often used to complete Topazio’s products, once again paying an homage to the role artisans play on the contemporary design.

A sophisticated dinner was hold on the Covet House Douro, a beautiful place at the riverside, hosted by Amândio Pereira, for the exquisite guests of this event as a more personal way to exchange ideas and values, between people with different points of view with the sole purpose of paying a tribute to the crafts and skills behind every kind of design. The dining decor was of an incredible taste, with elegant accessories such as fresh flowers and meticulously designed pieces to complete the dining table decoration.
A lot of skills and techniques were featured on this incredible summit. We praise and value luxury design, however we must acknowledge the meticulous arts and crafts behind the pieces we use for our home decor and interior design. Traditional arts such as metal work, wood carving, glass fusion and some more specific like “Renda de Bilros” and “Azulejo” should be praised and admired so they won’t get lost somewhere in time.
