Throwing lavish parties used to be the raison d’être of Houston interior designer J. Randall Powers. Cocktails for 175 of his nearest and dearest were common, while Christmastime meant fêtes for dozens more.

Knoll’s Brno chairs surround an antique table in the kitchen, where J. Randall Powers paneled the ceiling and installed cabinets whose rich gray-green hue gives the space a sense of intimacy; Neolithic Chinese pottery is displayed at the top of the upper cabinets, and the hood, ovens, and range are by Thermador.

J. Randall Powers advises repetition. “There is strength in repetition”, says the designer. Symmetry gives living rooms and spaces credibility and harmony. A pair of beautiful consoles or good simple armchairs is pleasing to the eye. He prefers dining tables and upholstered pieces to be individual. It’s also good not to over decorate and free of clutter.
