Parisian-Style Loft, Manhattan

“Coup de Foudre” was germinated in Los Angeles, where Ingrao was shopping for vintage furnishings. He was stuck with the idea to conjure a Parisian-style loft that melded choice antiques with whimsical pieces by contemporary designers like Wendell Castle, Gaetano Pesce, and Franz West.

Created in collaboration with Randy Kemper, the show takes its name from the French term meaning “love at first sight”. The title was chosen because each of the pieces—which include everything from a monumental tapestry from 1690 to an Erwan Boulloud marble and steel dining table—was selected based on whether Ingrao and Kemper got an instant “lovestruck” feeling upon first seeing it.

Georges Charpentier circa-1960 carved dining chairs upholstered in brown faux fur are set around a steel dining table by artist Erwan Boulloud. On the center of the wall, Gianluca Pacchioni’s Pupil mirror is flanked by Henge wall clips.

Private Retreat. Virgin Islands

Americans are accustomed to taking liberties, especially when it comes to architecture. There are, however, certain areas where the realities of topography and climate dictate appropriate materials and construction techniques. Interior designers Tony Ingrao and Randy Kemper can attest that the territory of St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands is such a place.

Inside and out, Ingrao’s home incorporates earthy mold- and mildew-resistant materials, including local granite, silver travertine, Italian sandstone, bamboo, and porcelain wall tile whose lustrous bronze hues echo the ruddy bark of the archipelago’s fragrant turpentine trees. Tile by Hastings Tile & Bath sheathes the dining area; the table base is a cactus root.

We wanted everything we used to be sympathetic with the landscape—nothing white or stucco. This house is elemental. It feels like it’s growing out of the park. Because the architecture is so rugged, we tried to make the decor whimsical. That juxtaposition is essential to the soul of the place.
