Top Interior Designers such as Martin Brudnizki and India Hicks, British ex-model, had a conversation with Elle Décor and they gave their advice on selecting the best dining table for your dining room.
Charles Curkin started the interview with “What do you look for in a dining table?” and for Martins Brudnizki the height is really significant “it has to be 28 to 30 inches tall, which is the right height. That’s most important.”. For India, the importance is in about being practical and functional “is it something I plan to use for family or for entertaining? My preference is to have a smaller table. If I have guests, I’ll slide a piece of plywood over the surface and cover it with a tablecloth—that way I can have 16 friends for dinner.”

Also, they also agreed that a modern dining table is the first thing you choose when you’re doing an interior design project. India has a favorite material: “wood. I like the softer materials—they’re more inviting.”, while Martin has a versatile opinion “It depends on the room. I’m doing a dining table right now in onyx. I have also had them made in marble, limestone, and metal. The ones I put in the Rose Room at Annabel’s have mirrored tops.”

Your contemporary dining table shape is really important considering the size of your dining room. They say that if you have a small dining room “the table should be round and 48 inches in diameter, an intimate size.” but if you have enough space “A rectangle is an easier table to fill. If you’ve got a big group, a round table won’t feel as cozy because the distance becomes greater the larger the circle.”

What about style? Charles Curkin asked if they prefer a brand-new or a vintage dining table. India’s response was really objective: “I prefer vintage. Nowadays, you can find something well priced and beautiful at auction.” and she has a favorite style “I like tables from the Regency period—they come with a huge amount of intrigue and history.” She also said that the best tables were “Art Deco dining tables, like the ones by Paul Dupré-Lafon, for the beauty of their geometry.”

For Martin Brudnizki “the home is about your story and your life” and “if everything is new, then it reads a bit plastic.”, however, he likes both styles saying “it’s entirely dependent on the mix of the other elements in the room.”
Now let’s talk about the dining table set. They say you can use both stools and dining chairs depending on the style of the dining room because if you live in a modern apartment, the stool is not appropriated. “If it’s a rustic house, a bench could work. It’s a very informal way of dining.” It also depends on your family and friends – benches have limitations comparing to dining chairs “because if you have a 90-year-old mother, she won’t want to sit for long without back support. She would need a real chair.” but “benches are good because you can accommodate more bottoms”.

Your dining table should be the heart of your home. It is where the family gather together and talk about everything – it’s not only about eating. Also, “you should use every space you have every day. Real estate is expensive, so get maximum use out of it.”

Last but not less important, Curkin asked “Who from history would you most like to have seated at your table?” and top interior designers showed appreciation for important people. For India, the perfect person was Amelia Earhart because “she must have been fascinating to be that courageous. Also, if she were at my table, she wouldn’t be missing, which would be extra surprising.” Martin chose “Cecil Beaton because he was such a polyglot; he devoured culture and had great style.”
